MOODS: A Playful Desk Table Lamp

Integrating Smart Film Technology for Customizable Lighting

Designed by Francesco Cappuccio, "MOODS" is a playful desk lamp with a hidden feature. This innovative design incorporates smart film technology, allowing users to adjust the setting of the light effects and create a personalized lighting experience.

The inspiration behind "MOODS" was to capture and depict different moods through design. The objective was to create a functional yet playful desk lamp that could be easily customized to suit individual preferences.

One of the unique properties of "MOODS" is its integration of smart film technology. This technology enables users to control the diffusion of light by simply swiveling the lampshade and adjusting the smart film. Need a reading light? Turn the LEDs' switch dimmer to the desired level and make the smart film transparent with just a touch. Looking for ambient lighting? Swivel the lampshade upwards and turn the smart film switch opaque.

The lamp's base is intentionally designed in an oversized torus shape, ensuring stability and adding the functionality of a stationery holder. This design element not only enhances the lamp's practicality but also adds a touch of uniqueness to its overall aesthetic.

The realization of "MOODS" relies on the application of smart film technology in a luminaire. Smart film, also known as switchable film, is capable of adjusting light transmission between transparent and opaque states. This technology utilizes the principle of Suspended Particle technology, similar to the concept of artificial magnets. When an electric current is passed through the film, the liquid crystals align themselves into straight lines, allowing all the light to pass through without scattering.

The "MOODS" desk lamp measures 400 mm in height, 416 mm in width, and 196 mm in depth. Its compact size makes it suitable for various desk setups and workspaces.

Francesco Cappuccio, the designer behind "MOODS," constantly explores cross-technology design applications. Through research, he discovered the potential of smart film technology in light control, leading to the creation of this unique desk lamp.

Despite facing creative and technical challenges, such as developing a molded polycarbonate lampshade with an integrated smart film layer, the design team successfully overcame these obstacles. The result is a visually appealing and functional desk lamp that adds a touch of playfulness to any workspace.

"MOODS" has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2019. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.
